Settings and dialogs
How dialogs, forms and the Settings screens behave, and how busy and error feedback appears.
Dialogs
- A dialog keeps the view, date, selection and scroll position underneath.
- Close and Cancel return to the surface that opened the dialog.
- Opening Account, About or the menu-bar editor never reveals the journal behind the calendar.
- One prominent commit action (Save, Apply or Reconnect), placed after Cancel.
- A reader closes with its heading ×. There is no Close button.
- Destructive and reset actions stay separate from the Cancel / commit pair.
- See Dialog and BottomSheet.
Layout in forms and lists
- A wrapped row has both horizontal and vertical gaps.
- Unrelated controls never touch.
- Use section headings and dividers sparingly, to separate account identity, subscription, account actions and sync information.
- Avoid dense stacks of differently sized buttons. Related destinations are full-width rows.
Busy, success and error feedback
- Feedback never moves the controls around it, especially on e-ink.
- Replace an existing label, or overlay the affected surface.
- Use a bounded error dialog when needed.
- No spinners and no transitions.
Settings
- One sectioned dialog with no footer.
- It stays mounted under the pages and dialogs it opens.
- Each row opens its existing dialog. Only implemented settings appear. There is no row-density setting.

| About |
- Pen presets lists the presets like the toolbar menu. Editing one opens the preset editor, which returns to Settings.
ToDo reminders
- Settings → ToDos has a “Daily reminder” toggle row and a “Reminder time” value row (default “09:00”).
- Reminders are off until turned on. They belong to this device and do not sync; the toggle's supporting line says “Due and overdue ToDos, on this device”.
- Turning the toggle on asks for Android's notification permission (Android 13 and later). The toggle turns on only once notifications are allowed.
- After a refusal, the toggle stays off and its supporting line reads “Notifications are blocked. Allow them in Android settings.” The next tap opens Android's notification settings for SpareThought; returning with notifications allowed turns reminders on.
- When reminders are on but Android blocks notifications later, the toggle stays on and reads “Notifications are off in Android settings”.
- Reminder time opens the 24-hour time picker titled “Reminder time”, with the device's time zone in its subtitle. The row stays usable while reminders are off.
- See ToDo reminders for when the digest appears and what it shows.
Handwriting recognition languages
- Each row shows the language name and its download state, with one trailing Download or Remove action.
- Search and the downloaded-only filter stay above the scrolling list.
- Unknown status is shown differently from “not downloaded”.
Webcal subscriptions
- Each subscription is a list card: “Refreshed …” or “Not checked yet”, Hidden, and the last error in red.
- The card's ⋮ offers Hide/Show, Edit, Refresh and Remove….
- The add/edit form asks for a “Calendar link”.
- Username and Password appear only when “Needs a username and password” is ticked.
- No Back button: × returns from the form to the list, and from the list to Calendars.
Event reminders
- Reminders read in words (“At time of event”, “10 minutes before”, “1 day before”), with the delivery methods the calendar reports.
- Add reminder is a dialog with When option rows and an “Alert as” choice.
- Times are always picked and shown in 24-hour form.
About
- Shows the version, the app's purpose, and full-width Website, Privacy policy and Subscription terms links.
- There is no in-app license catalogue or license page.
